Good atmosphere Let me start off by saying get the spicy salsa some of the best salsa I've ever had everything else here is okay. I judge Mexican restaurants on how well they season there beef fajitas, yea needs major work. Owner feel free to message me for a sample recipe. The best thing here are the street tacos and blue moon combo. All in all I visit this place more then any place n eagle River it's not bad.

Friendly staff and good food, certainly best Mexican in Eagle River. The Pollo Fundidos is my husband's fav and I like the chicken fajitas, stay away from the steak fajitas though. I find they are tiny shards of steak that seem to remnants of something else. Great bar!

I usually judge mexican restaurants is by their peppers. Love em. We try and eat here whenever we come to town. Great atmosphere!

We have been faithful customers of Garcias for many many years (20+ years) every single time we have been here we have never been disappointed. Excellent service, fantastic food, margarita are wonderful! Even the bartender has stopped by our table to say hi to the kids. We love the chips and salsa. Their to go portion of chips and salsa are very generous and we always order a bag to go. Fun & rustic decor has us coming back again and again.

Up until recently I always had consistently good food and service when I come here with the family or with groups. We loved the place and I've been coming here almost as long as I've lived in AK. Though i will admit on an early Friday evening in August 2014 we visited and the food was barely palatable largely due to basically being burnt (beans for example had started to break down & separate and entire plate looked like it had been under broiler too long). Our server had a major attitude, including talking badly about other staff (who I might add were more friendly and helpful than her) and acting like we were inconveniencing her. This was very disappointing and we were one of three tables she had and I noticed another customer just get so disappointed they just asked for the check in less than half the time we were there. We picked at our plates, took some home, but mostly just ate the chips which quickly ran out and were not even offered to be refilled despite ordering 3 entrees. We drove out from South Anchorage and as my wife stated, it is no longer worth the trip and we'll go somewhere else unless we are already in Eagle River, then maybe we'll consider it.

Stopped in for a to go order. First they got my order wrong. How hard is it to make something off the dinner menu...it looked like a 4 year old had packed it, there was sauce all over everything. ugh...after returning the first wrong order, they got it right..kind of, ordered the chili colorado burro...Got it home, all the way to Palmer, tried to cut into it and the "beef" was so tough I couldn't even pull it apart. The red sauce tasted like it came out of a can and the chips were old and stale..I am done with Garcia;s. Getting a decent meal once in a while isn't enough. It should be every time. I have complained before and was comped my next meal. So I tried again. It is awful. Wish the old owner was back. I want my $30.00 bucks back.

An ERAK icon. Margaritas and Mini-chimis; breakfast of champions. In a land not populated with chain restaurants back in the day, Garcias was once a lone chain outpost in the Great White North. I understand that the Eagle Eagle establishment is no longer affiliated with the chain. Good for them.

After 30 years of eating and enjoying food here..... I'm done. My beautiful bride and I grew up on Garcia's mini chimis, polo funditos, and fajitas. I've eaten here. Hundreds of times..... But the meal I just had was absolute garbage. It's obvious that the ingredients/ maker of ingredients have changed. The preparation has changed. Something awful has happened at my favorite restaurant of old. My wife has never.... NEVER not finished her meal.. I have never.... NEVER not finished my meal. We both enjoyed out mini chimis, but when the main meal came.... It was a few bites each and we were done. Whatever has happened at Garcia's ...... It's a travesty!

The service was ok but their food wasn't so great. That may also be because they got my order wrong. I asked for a super simple burrito with just rice beans and cheese only, nothing else. What I got was a rice and bean burrito swimming in enchilada sauce. No cheese (or very little).

We came here as part of a group that consisted of approximately 120 to 175 persons. This place was not equipped to support such a large group and the layout doesn't help either. Everyone was scattered all over the place (which was not conducive to the reason for meeting). The servers appeared to have a hard time being able to take orders with our group plus the others in the restaurant. They are really hard workers and we could tell they were trying their best. However I didn't like that amidst this chaos the manager would tell them they were doing things wrong and "no more mistakes!" which I found was inappropriate and just cold considering these people needed more staff and even the manager himself was running around like a chicken with his head cut off :-/ they deserved some credit. Aside from this get together, we have been here before. I find their food to be pretty average. The portions are plentiful and almost overwhelming. There was too much going on in my plate and it could fully satisfy two adults easily so in that sense you get your money's worth. This isn't my top choice for Mexican food but we still continue to visit once in a while.

The best service tonight i have ever had. Was seated immediately and ordered our drinks. Sarah our waitress then came back took our food order and shortly after that our food came out before our drinks. The food was really good and fresh. Our drinks came right after our food and they were great. Gotta say the Georgia peach margarita was awesome. Sarah came to check on us many times and was fast with anything else we needed. This was a Friday night right around dinner time. Hands down the best service ever!!!

I have lived in Eagle River for over 16 years, I have been here plenty of times in my life, and it never gets better. I always hope but it doesnt. Its mostly just a well known Eagle River place to be at. The mexican food is not good at all. The only thing that I like there is their chicken little changas with sour cream. Go any place in Eagle River for mexican but this place!

I eat here often - a must get is the Pollo Fundido. I'm always happy with it, so I don't take a lot of chances with anything else on the menu. I've always had friendly and prompt service, so no complaints there. They've added a gourmet drink menu as of late - I tried the piña colada, not the best but I'm always pleased with their margaritas.

My go to for Mexican food in eagle river. The fundido is delicious and servings are large.

Everyone says this is the "place to go" in Eagle River for Mexican food. I've been here twice without being overly wowed. Good food but not remarkable. I usually get the spinach enchiladas at any Mexican place. They were good here. Drinks are strong. Service was polite and quick both when we went to dinner and to lunch. Plenty of large tables if you are meeting a group.

Great place for the family and good food. We had lunch there last week. Good service, great atmosphere, and I had the chicken tortilla soup with the chicken fajita salad... It was delicious.

Terrible service...we used to come here a lot over the past few years...food quality has been slowly going down hill. Cleanliness of restaurant is also getting grimy. We brought family here from out of state, and they forgot to put in some of our orders, so when they started brining out the food, they were short. Ha! When I approached the manager, he stated " we were really busy, just kinda happens..." Really? Why do they write down your order then???

Based on our lunch today I'm giving this place 1 star. OMG it was a total disaster!!! where do I start? The service was terrible, they had one elderly woman waiting on the entire floor, which was impossible for her. The food was down right nasty, there was so much cheese I couldn't figure out where my enchilada's were, it ended up being a big pile if mush. I finally gave up and pushed the plate away before I got completely grossed out!! Needless to say, I won't be returning to Garcia's in this lifetime.

Wife and I both had combination platters. Wow, tons of cheese, we loved it! Probably not the most healthy, but it sure was good! Chips and salsa were also excellent. Ask for hot salsa, it was even better! Went on a Monday evening around 530, no reservation needed. Wait staff wasn't excellent by any means, but brought out piping hot food VERY quickly after ordering, so they met the task. Just took a while to get the table cleared and our bill. They do NOT accept American Express.

Garcia's has been around forever and was one of the few restaurants in Eagle River for a long time. I remember loving it as a kid, but I think that had more to do with the bottomless tortilla chips and salsa than the quality of the food. Most recently my experience there was so terrible I will never go back! My mom and I both ordered chimichangas and they were so disgusting we didn't even eat half of them. The rice on the side was extremely over seasoned and we ended up just feeling sick afterward. The kitchen also screwed up my order and sent a steak fajita chimichanga instead of chicken fajita chimichanga. There was a large group of people in the bar who had obviously been over served and they were yelling obscenities and other unintelligible drivel so loudly that it was hard to have a conversation even though we were on the other side of the restaurant. Like I said, never coming here again.

Before I married my husband and starting popping out babies, Garcia's was our standard Friday night date spot for several years. We always sat in the bar area. Drinks are strong and the bartenders know your name! Don and the young blonde hair guy (I can never remember his name) are super great. When it gets busy or they're short staffed they'll take our orders and take care of you. Sometimes the service is slow, but it does get crazy busy - patience is a rare thing these days, isn't it? The food is great and I believe they were bought by someone new or another partner came in and they've revamped the menu and have added some new stuff. The food is plentiful and me and my pregnancy cravings are going there tonight! :)

Super dirty! We loved that place a lot but lately it is just to bad! And food wait for ever! You are always missing personal and if you need something it will take some time to get it! Needs improvement on staff and cleaning

Nasty. Taco salad was awful. Only redeeming dish was the fried ice cream.

Either this was an odd night for Garcia's or my expectations for Alaskan Mexican food is really low and Garcia's happened to be better than what I was expecting. Either way, I can't say I was disappointed with my experience. Upon entering Garcia's, it's clear that the Mexican theme is done beyond overkill. It's as if a pinata threw up and its innards covered the walls. Ended up ordering a chicken Colorado Burro combo plate. Decent flavors in the burro and average beans and rice. Service was decent as well. As someone from California where we have endless options when it comes from food south of the boarder, Garcia's was on par with some of the average eateries back home. Can't say I was blown away by the food, nor can I say I think it sucked...it was a decent experience and one I was not expecting from Alaska.

I must have hit it on a good day because I don't have any complaits really. The waiter was awesome and you got a heck of a lot of food for the money. I had some type of sampler plate which I don't know the name of because there's no menu posted and it was pretty tasty. My wife had the enchilada's and she enjoyed them. They've been around for at least 20 years and are still hanging in there so they must be doing something right.

I like most people who go here eat here for one reason. The chicken mini chimi's. Pretty much won't eat anything else there but I will eat the cheese enchiladas. I have heard many nightmares about the kitchen. And I know one of the owners is quite a d'bag. But I like my mini chimi's. Most the waiters and waitress's are friendly and attentive and some of the prices are a little high.

We hadn't been to Garcia's in a couple of years, so while we were at the Bear Paw Festival, we thought we'd go back...with fond memories of good food and good prices. We prices were OK but the food was not. Three of us ordered three different things and all three of us were extremely disappointed by the quality of the food. It was bland, to say the least. I had a chimi...their special, and the shredded meat was tasteless. The rice was horrible...I can honestly say it's the worst I've had at a Mexican restaurant. My wife ordered steak fajitas and asked that the be medium rare. It came well done and tough, and the fajitas are served with no lettuce or cheese, standard fare for most other places. She asked for lettuce and it was dellivered - and added to the bill. $1.55 for a side of lettuce with lots of brown is a joke!!! My mother-in-law was equally disappointed with her order. There are plenty of other Mexican restuarants around - we will visit them when we're in the mood...

My first single star establishment. I went twice, to give it the benefit of possibly having a bad day. Ordered different things both times, first time... hardly edible. Second time... nauseating. I really don't understand how they could still be in business. I ordered a seafood salad and the only seafood that was actually in it was imitation crab and canned shrimp. Mix that with whatever disgusting mayo-type "dressing" they put on it. I had a hard time not throwing it back at my rude-barely-there waitress. The Shirley temple that I ordered was good. Though they skimped on the cherries. Enter at your own risk!!

Terrible food! When we sent our plates back they offered to make something else and we kindly declined. Still had to pay for it. Will NEVER go back or recommend them. The chips and cheese crisp was good though. I guess it's kind of hard to screw up melted cheese.

I love my mexican food. When i went to garcias, so did the flies! There was a heard of flies in the loby and the food tasted like it was heated in a microwave and the environment scared me. Thats all i have to say.

I read others reviews and I wonder where they went. This has been a lunch favorite of mine for years. The street tacos are superb. The Pollo Fundido is the plate I recommend for all the clients I take there and they all rave.

Fajita burrito baby!! Not real keen on the rice but the beans are crazy good. Someone try the rice and send me a comment. Just didn't taste right.

I don't even want to give them one star. It's hard to find a person in Eagle River that HASN'T worked there. Ask them about the cleanliness or preparation of the food. They won't eat there. If they drop food on the kitchen floor they still serve it. Brown things in your salad. That's right, it's not burnt rice. It's a disgusting place, health inspectors ignore it because of the owner's political pull. The only reason it's in business?...It's a bar and we have a lot of people that like margaritas in this town. Booze is the only way to ignore the service and food quality at Garcia's.

This is not a place to go eat. This is a place to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with the girls on mom's night out, but avoid the food. Everything tastes as though it was made in the same, unwashed, burnt pan.

  • Jon S.

Close to putrid. The only redeeming quality was the margaritas and chips and salsa. I ordered fajita nachos that had stringy, overcooked meat, no beans, and shredded cheese. The bar is the one good quality. A huge disappointment for us Eagle River residents.

This was the first place we ate after moving to ER. It was the last time we went there. It's just awful. How are they in business?

Let me first preface this review by saying I grew up in New Mexico and have somewhat high expectations for Mexican food. That said, there is no excuse for the dreck that came out of Garcia's kitchen. I ordered chicken tacos but instead received some kind of deep fried chicken chimichanga with two wads of sour cream covered with a thick hard epidermis of melted cheese. After rolling back the cheese I took a bite. The shredded chicken was salty beyond reason, the rice was hard, and the cheese greasy and plastic...horrid. Others at our table had similar responses. The best compliment I heard was "this is the third worst Mexican food I've ever had". Even the taco saladwas bad, how do you f-up a taco salad? What continually perplexes me is that it's really not rocket science to make good (even healthy) Mexican dishes, the simpler the ingredients the better, just start with good quality. I will say Garcia's is a nice big space with potential if they cleaned it up a bit. I don't think I'll be giving them a second chance though.

Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
